How To Increase Alexa Rank

ADVERTISEMENTS

Alexa Rank is measured by the level of traffic your web site receives from the number of people who visit with the Alexa toolbar installed. It is important for you to increase your Alexa rank because advertisers and advertising services like Text Link Ads and ReviewMe use your site’s Alexa rank as a way to determine the worth of a link on your web site.

You can sell links on your site at a high price if you have a high Alexa Rank, so it is important to increase your Alexa Rank.

Dosh Dosh has suggested 20 quick ways to increase Alexa Ranking, out of which I tried only two and my Alexa Rank has already improved!

Around June last year I placed the Alexa Traffic Rank Button on this site and my Alexa Rank continually increased from around 90,000 to 20,000 until I removed the Alexa Traffic Rank Button after a redesign.

Only recently I noticed that my Alexa rank was decreasing slowly (around 26,000) and I decided to try out some of the tips suggested on Dosh Dosh.

I just tried two out of the 20 tips provided and my Alexa Rank has improved slowly from around 26,000 to 25,576 in about 2 weeks.

I just wrote an article on Alexa and the Search Status Plugin here: http://egonitron.com/2007/04/1.....us-plugin/

I’m glad they came out with that plugin, hopefully it will help even out the playing field, considering the only thing Alexa could count on before is people using their toolbar in IE. It’s terribly inaccurate.

I have placed a Alexa Widget on my site, I hope I will see some improvements.

DoshDosh presented some good ways to increase Alexa rankings but what he said is important not only for Alexa, those tips are good for increasing your traffic and for getting more backlinks also.

How effective do you think the autosurf thing for alexa is?
I really hate installing the alexa toolbar..

I dunno if it works or my blog really get the traffic, but the FX plugin seems to work. At least the Traffic ranking from the country u surf increases drastically. :D

I’m almost in the top 4000 rank for the UAE.

Of course you do have the blackhat techniques, if that’s how you want to go (Alexa redirect URL force visit for example.)

: It depends on how much you care about your ranking. To some people it’s nothing compared to working on other SEO techniques. A lot of advertising companies look at your Alexa rank to determine how much you’re going to make, and that’s a big deal. Well worth the trouble in my opinion.

: ok, I see what you’re saying. I agree, I questioned how much that would actually help rankings, but I installed it on one of my blogs to try it out (AutomoBlog.net) and my rank did indeed jump a bit, it’s just hard to tell if it’s from that or because my site is becoming increasingly popular.

Ashish and egon- I am not sure if the Alexa Rank Button helps to increase Alexa Rank or not, but I do remember my Alexa Rank improving from around 90,000 to 20,000 after I had placed the Alexa Rank button on my sidebar on June last year.

Once I removed the Alexa Rank Button, I noticed my Alexa Rank decreasing, so I put it back, and once again my Alexa Rank started improving slowly.

So do you think Alexa Rank Button helps to increase Alexa Rank?

Wow John, numbers like that would certainly convince me to keep it up there :) For me, I took off the button and my rank hasn’t dropped yet, but if it does, you better believe I’m putting it back up.

To my best knowledge and experience, installing the Alexa Toolbar will give small web sites a huge boost.

Also Getting your web site reviewed by people in Alexa will help.

Another (greyhat) technique is to link to your site in signatures and whatnot with an Alexa redirect URL (http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?www.yoursite.com) That way all traffic goes through Alexa first. I don’t condone using that of course :)

: Thats funny , ranking must be based on when people visit not by putting some script. This sounds like alexa’s self advertsing scheme “Put my button and your rank will improve”

  21. 21

    Vince Cordic

    April 13, 2007 at 7:38 am

Perhaps the Alexa rank button acts as a counter for Alexa if it detects that the toolbar isn’t installed. That could explain why your rank goes up when you install it.

Then again maybe not, I took a look at the script source and I don’t see anything like that, it could be transparent though.

Personally I’m not sure why ad networks bother looking at Alexa data, it can easily be manipulated, and is usually skewed anyways depending on the market.

  22. 22

    egon

    April 13, 2007 at 7:46 am

I agree Vince, and I’m not sure how the Alexa widget does whatever it does, if anything. I hate how ad networks rely so much on Alexa, but honestly what else are they going to use? If nothing else, it gives a general idea of the popularity of a site. I mean, chances are, a site with a ranking of 75,000 is more popular than a site with a ranking of 175,000. Unfortunately, they *are* easy to manipulate. I just wish there was a more reliable method of ranking sites other than Google PR.

We have released AlexaAutoSurf.com - an auto-surf site that only allows users with the Alexa toolbar to join/surf. Take a look at it, most of the sites in the network have already jumped from 7-8 million all the way close to 100,000. It’s a great way to receive thousands of hits daily and you’ll see the results on Alexa!

As far as the redirect goes, I use it but only on the “home” link on my blog. Since a majority of people will click it to return to the front page, believe it or not it does help. Other than this method I added the Alexa widget and the Firefox addon. I’ve gone from 275,000 to 126,000 in about 3 weeks.

: For AlexaAutoSurf, that’s a good idea but you need the actual toolbar to use it. I don’t use IE, and I am going to guess a lot of other people around here don’t either. I use the SearchStatus plugin which reports to Alexa. You should support that as well..

: Congrats on the Alexa jump, what Firefox addon are you talking about, the SearchStatus plugin?

Due to a higher volume of project requests from our clients, I am unable to add support for SearchStatus, but I will notify a few of my developers and see hopefully we’ll support it within a few days. I hope to see everyone there soon, it’s a new site, and honestly, I launched the site because I was looking for something similar but could not find any online site that had the results that I was looking for.

    June 14, 2007 at 5:21 am

Well I have learned a lot from posts like these. I can testify to seeing an excellent improvement in my page ranking (about 27%!) after doing the following 4 things…
1)Using this site, which is free, that sends thousands of people to my sites everyday
2)Getting the firefox extension (alternative to the alexa toolbar)
3)Adding the alexa widget to my site. (to a previous poster- this works because it counts more of your traffic, rather than just those with the alexa toolbar)
4)Using the following URL whenever possible
    “http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?www.xxxxxxxxxxx.com”
just replace the x’s with your sites’ url.

I highly recommend doing all 4!

Thanks again for this post! (i do have to say though that the widget only seems to record somewhere in the neighborhood of 15% of actual traffic). Using the redirect through alexa will count a lot of the hits to your site that the widget misses. It only counts a hit once per 24hrs per IP address however.
    Best of luck to all.

This plugin is no good, since it screws with your links, and in this way diminishing your Google ranking and search results. A better option is to make the Alexa redirecting JavaScript-powered: in this way the HTML will not be modified, and the redirects will still work. I’ve applied this technique to a new plugin called Better “Alexa Redirect” WordPress plugin. If you are interested about it, visit this URL to learn more about it:

    Hi INconstantIN,

The alexa site rank / traffic widget is at the end of the page (below the footer) - you need to scroll down:
    http://www.ourwedding.in

Regular users don’t scroll below the footer area. Even when they scroll there is nothing bad in them seeing our traffic ranking.

We have displayed this on the our blog posting also:
    http://blog.ourwedding.in/?p=7

    Our traffic is counted when
    - our home page is accessed (http://www.ourwedding.in)
    - our blog is accessed (http://blog.ourwedding.in/?p=7)

    Hope this clarifies your doubts.

I did install the alexa widget on my site and afterwards my website dropped from around 3,000,000 down to 1,000,000. However I did use a little more google adwords. I feel that putting the widget on your site makes you more aware of your ranking and thus makes you want to work a little harder to improve it.
