The majority of web surfers use 1024×768

ADVERTISEMENTS

The screen resolution 800 x 600 pixels has signficantly decreased since July 2005. More and more internet users choose for screen resolution 1024 x 768 or higher. The finding has important implications for web site designers because most web sites are designed for a screen resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. 1280×1024 is #2 in the world.

According to my stats, most of the visitors here are also on 1024×768. Actually, I think it’s good news because I don’t think my current 3 column theme would display well on resolutions of 800×600 or below.

I think this is great news. But it also means that Web Designers may have to redesign their sites to make them display well on 1024×767 as they may have given importance to 800×600.

Wonderful! For all my previous layouts I built each one to fit the 800×600 screen. It greatly limited the scope of my design and got real frustrating for a while. But for my latest site revamp I threw caution to the wind and designed it according to the 1024×768 screen. It looks a lot better now, both readability and aesthetics wise.

Oh yeah my site visitors are largely 1024×768 screen users too!

This is great information. Quite a few of my sites have the same characteristics, people going to the higher resolutions. The good news is it places a lot more content ‘above the fold’ which is prime real estate in a browser.

Many users in India still use 800×600. Some cyber cafes with old machines have that only :(

I’m also throwing off the 800 x 600 rule now as my analytics show
