Google Drops PageRank For Many Websites

ADVERTISEMENTS

Google PageRank DropLooks like I am the only blogger who hasn’t talked about the latest PageRank update so far. So here goes…there were two batches of PageRank drop - in the first some sites like JohnChow.com, Entrepreneurs-Journey.com and this blog itself (from PR 6 to 5) that were selling text links were hit.

The second batch took place yesterday and I came to know from DailyBlogTips that this blog’s PR had dropped again from 5 to 4 this time. Many blogs were hit in the second batch including popular ones like Engadget, Problogger, Copyblogger, John Chow, QuickOnlineTips and Weblog Tools Collection!

Though many sites were hit, I still do see a few blogs selling text links that were not hit (like LiewCF.com) and the confusing part is some blogs that were not selling text links were hit too, so can selling text links be the reason behind these PR drops or is Google changing their PageRank algorithm?

Anyways before a third PR drop batch comes and drops my PR again to maybe 1 or 0, I have decided to remove my text link ads! I will be removing Text Link Ads by the end of this month and use nofollow for the other ads.

Did your blog get a PageRank drop too?

The “PR drop wave” is probably because of the text link sales issue. I’m also assuming that it’s not the one single thing Google took into consideration while determining PR.

Because, many sites which used to sell links(not anymore) have also been affected. At this point it’s not clear as to what are the metrics Google is relying upon. We have assumptions - Yes!

I think now, Google PR 4 is a very good rank, most popular blogs are at 4 now.

As long as it doesn’t affect your traffic, you should be OK. Right?

    Cheers!

Googles PR wouldnt be of any relevance if they dont eventually integrate it with their search algorithm to influence search rankings..after all, if PR is devised to indicate quality, then google search results will have to throw the quality links ahead of others…

so expect the worse and plan and innovate to overcome this..be prudent never think of ignoring Google and its PR, atleast until they are no longer popular among surfers…

Mani and Nirmal - I agree. So far my traffic has not been affected, and I hope it doesn’t.

Emanuele - wow, you have sold so many text links (including to porn sites) and still you did not lose your PageRank, anyways it is a good idea to use nofollow for your text links.

selling text links on blogs are going to take a big hit because of this.. especially if popular ones like you begin removing them…
one more source gone down the drain..

    John,

I think you should pull off text link ads and sponsored reviews (comparatively OK I think).

Or go for NOFOLLOW on all sponsored links.

I don’t think there’s anything to fret over. After all it’s just a teeny weeny green bar. :)

    Cheers!

I’ve started a new blog on 26 Aug 2007, however Google is yet to rank my page even though my blog is 60 days old and have updated contents quite frequently! Any idea when will google rank my page?

My TLA didn’t affect the PR on my tips site during this update. I don’t know is it because it had already suffered a lower rating many months back from a 6 to a 4.

    ,
thank you for your reply and the link. however, i don’t have any problem in google’s indexing. my blog is already getting traffic through google search, and it means google has started indexing my page since long time. but the problem is my 60 days old blog doesn’t have a pagerank yet and that’s what i want to know about!
Do you have any idea when will google assign pagerank to my blog?

    ,
i’m so sorry to hear it from you that you’ve lost the money that you deserve. consider removing the TLA plug-in now itself so as to avoid free advertising in your blog.

Another one of my blogs, around 35 days old has a PR3 as well.. As long as you have a decent amount of content, a PR3 isn’t gonna be a problem..

My main blog however has gone to PR4 from a 0 since it was started only after the last PR update

John, you were mentioning about removing text links. However, is it OK to have banner ads (like 125×125). Will that cause the same problems as text links?

that is very interesting, i know many sites that increased the number of visitors, but their PR is decreased.

Maybe Google is working on a new PR algorithm, or something to replace.

Looks like you took another hit John. I thought the TLA ads was the issue and reckon Google saw your affiliate banner at the top of the page. I hope they’re not following through from deranked sites via their comments and links to other blogs that have been cited…. :-(
