WordPress 2.3 Released

ADVERTISEMENTS

Those of you who missed the good news, WordPress 2.3 was released a few hours ago with lots of exciting new features including tagging, plugin update notification, URL handling improvements and much more.

What I liked the most of this version is the new feature to notify users of WordPress and plugin updates, but I wish the plugin update notification could be shown on the dashboard instead since I don’t often check the plugin page.

Though this new version supports tagging, I stopped using tags today and uninstalled Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin as I find that visitors rarely visit my tag pages – all that the tag pages do is create duplicate content!

Anyways if you are interested in tagging and have been using a tagging plugin (like Ultimate Tag Warrior, Jeromes Keywords, Simple Tags, and Bunnys Technorati Tag plugins) you can bring your data into the new system with the new included importers.

Here’s how you can add WordPress 2.3 Tags to your current theme and here are 10 things you need to know about WordPress 2.3.

Also Google Sitemaps Generator for WordPress seems to be incompatible for this new version of WordPress, better upgrade to the latest stable version.

Update: Popularity Contest plugin seems to be throwing up errors when I make a comment or when I approve them. This is the error I get:

Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock’ (2) in /home/.guaymas/johntp/johntp.com/wp-content/plugins/popularity-contest.php on line 544

Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: A link to the server could not be established in /home/.guaymas/johntp/johntp.com/wp-content/plugins/popularity-contest.php on line 544
Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock’ (2) on line: 544

Does anyone know how to fix this (I am using WordPress 2.3) ? Or is there any better plugin that displays popular posts of a blog?

hey John, i contacted arne the Google Sitemaps Generator creator because i have the same issue as you and he told me this:

    ———————————————————–
I’ve checked the PopContest plugin and it looks like it’s not the sitemap plugins fault. The PopContest plugin makes mysql queries without using the WordPress Database class and gets the wrong database connection (the one from the sitemap plugin). If the plugin would use the DB methods provided by Wordpress, it should work.

I’m going to try contacting alex king but i really doubt he will be changing the plugin anytime soon.

Hope we can make something out of this because my programming skills wont help.

I really hope the Popularity Contest plugin is updated to fix this problem. Let me know what the plugin author had to say. Thanks.
