WordPress 2.2 Released
ADVERTISEMENTSBy now most of the WordPress users must be aware of the new version that is available for download. I was having fever so I could not blog about it earlier (I am getting better now).
The new version (WordPress 2.2) includes over two hundred bug fixes and new features like Widgets integration and infinite comment stream that brings in another comment in the background when you delete or spam a comment on your Edit Comments page.
Other things I noticed are a button to deactivate all plugins and a preview link above the content box when editing a post or page.
I also noticed that both my sidebars now show up below the comment form
I am sure I did not edit my theme, so it may have something to do with the new Widgets integration. From now on I will wait atleast one week before upgrading to any new WordPress release.
Did you upgrade your WordPress blog to the latest version? Did you face any problems?

Im very excited for wordpress 2.2 (some really cool features), but I wont be able to upgrade for 2 months – I’ve made too many changes to the core code. I also know JohnChow had sidebar problems as well.

At http://uploadforyou.com I upgraded and it was fine. But I have a single sidebar with no widgets there. I am not going to upgrade yet for The Reviewer site, it seems like I might have problems.

I really don’t want to upgrade it, I’m happy with 2.1. The only thing I can see it being useful for is deactivating all plugins. I don’t have much interest in Widgets, as they’ve ALWAYS broken on my blog

I upgraded one of my blogs to Wordpress 2.2 just to test it out, and like many others, I also had sidebar problems. I’ll be waiting until the bugs are sorted out before I updgrade any other blogs, or I may not upgrade at all (at least for now).

My sidebars are now back to where they are supposed to be. It was caused by the comment quicktags plugin for some reason. I just had to deactivate the plugin and everything was back to normal.
Thanks CypherHackz

I have seen a similar plugin on other blogs, but never cared about it as I had comment quick tags.

This new version may broke your existing plug-ins, its better to check compatibility issues first.

The preview thing sucks. But I don’t post daily or very frequently so it really didn’t get my think about it much.
Recover soon! Hope you feel much better now…

I did upgrade but faced a problem with my theme being K2. There’s a known conflict that everybody must be aware of:

I am not sure to upgrade. This is really scary to me this time. Specially the widget. I am waiting for someone to write a post on it.

WP2.2 sounds like a blast, but I’m always wary of jumping in as soon as the latest upgrade appears. Remember what happened between 2.1.1 and 2.1.3. Security issues were rife, I seem to recall. I’ll jump in as soon as the dust settles, but by then we’ll probably be looking at 2.2.1

Yes.
My Triplek2 doesn’t work with WP 2.2.

Ashwin- Earlier WordPress use to display the preview right below the content frame and that used to make that page load slow, now that they show the preview separately the page loads much faster.
David Bradley- You are right, next time onwards I will wait atleast for a week before upgrading.
Daniel Becher- K2 based themes won’t work well on WordPress 2.2 because of the new built-in widgets solution.
To keep using K2 Sidebar Modules, you’ll need to disable the widgets with the Disable WordPress Widgets plugin.

I upgraded my main blog that uses a modified “Misty Look” theme to WP 2.2 RC2 early on with no problems and just recently to the final version. However, my “sub-blog’s” theme (Subtle by Glued Ideas) was not compatible with WP 2.2’s new built in Widgets and had comment form problems as well so I had to go off and find another 3 column theme for the series blog I’m writing. Fortunately, Sadish Bala (author of Misty Look) had recently come out with a new 3 column theme called “Emerald” that fit the bill.
Otherwise, no other problems at all. I don’t use the Comments Quick Tags plugin myself. It all seems to be a matter of plugin and theme compatibility issues as it is with any major upgrade. I can deal with that if it means a better blogging platform in the long run.

John Chow was reporting issues with the Top Commentators plugin among other things and reverted to 2.1.3. I’d love to take advantage of 2.2’s performance improvements but I can wait.

I never upgrade straight away…..
I have a test blog set up on a sub-domain that I always run these things through first, check out my theme, plugins everything.
My hosting package gives me a ridiculous amount of disk space, SQL etc. might as well use it

I had absolutely no problems with the upgrade, once it was completely uploaded. Of course, I edit the theme and the CSS myself and don’t use any of the fancy new stuff.

Along with the bug fixes, WordPress 2.2 brings new bugs to the table: wp_mail removes the Content-Type, you can’t remove widgets in Firefox and all widgets are used by default… etc. You can check the bug list at trac.wordpress.org
The official install guide is quite hard to understand so i decided to write a tutorial with pictures about how to upgrade to wordpress 2.2 and i allso describe the compatibility issues on widgets.
