Top Commentators Update
ADVERTISEMENTSI updated the Show Top Commentators WordPress Plugin as soon as I found that it had an update that fixed the ‘reset weekly’ option. The ‘reset weekly’ option used to work incorrectly for some reason, so I could not use that option earlier.
Now that the problem is fixed, I have set the Top Commentators plugin to reset weekly instead of every 6 days.
I also set the plugin to display the Top 10 Commentators instead of 5. I hope this encourages more readers to comment.
Getting your site on my Top Commentator list will not only help you get traffic but will also benefit you SEOwise as you will be getting a free sitewide link on a PageRank 6 site without a nofollow tag.
Update: Just to encourage you even further…I currently get 5000+ unique traffic per day.

Hey John,
I have finally moved to wordpress and like this tip, i have made use of several others from your site for making the move.
Now that I am in the US i have started to blog more actively. Will comment more so hope to be in that list too.

Ashish Mohta- The update was actually made 1 month back
Benedict Herold- Coming weekly is better than not coming at all. Good to have you back
Keith Dsouza- It’s been such a long time since you commented here. I know you have been busy with your work that you could not even blog frequently.
btw, why did you not move to WordPress earlier? Remember I used to ask you this question in the past too
Good to have you back too

The reason i did not move to wordpress was because I was getting used to Joomla, but when I realized how tedious it was getting to post an article an follow up on a comment i decided to move.
Also there is way too many tools for wordpress using which I can even post on my site using the comfort of my desktop, so many factors made me do that.
But am glad since the tips i will get from you and many others will definitely help me improve me using wordpress.

Wordpress is a nice content manager system indeed. It looks okay next to Joomla and Mambo.

Keith - I just made the move to Wordpress from Blogger and its night and day. Wordpress is amazing and I love the active community of plugin developers. With that power comes some complexity and the occasional unexplained glitch but overall I’m happy to have made the move.
Curious - How was your move from Joomla? The Blogger to Wordpress move was not without its difficulties but generally smooth. The hardest thing was dealing with the images. I found a means to import the images into the corresponding Wordpress articles but Blogger had some seriously ridiculous folder structures along with filenames which made no sense. I spent the better part of a day creating new structures, renaming images and relinking them all. At least its all done now.

good deal, but now I have to leave more comments more often, haha!

Hey Robert,
The move was smooth but only after i wrote some custom scripts to move the categories and posts along with their comments.
I also had to run few alter commands on the database after the move, but that’s one advantage of being a software engineer and running a blog :), i am gonna detail out if any one wants to make a move in future from Joomla making it just a one click process.

Lol, I second Blain’s comment. I sure do appreciate your kind gesture of sharing link love with your readers.
I actually shun high traffic blogs that omit the Top commentators plug-in. Why not share the Google love with those who helped to build your blog?
Keep up the good work..

5000+ unique hits!!! At least some should see the Top Commentors section right? So get 5000 unique hits and you get 22000 alexa rank….man, that’s gonna take lot of time and effort for me to achieve this

Cool tips and tricks
April 30, 2007 at 2:43 pm
I have set mine to reset monthly. I did not think that reseting weekly will make people coming back more often. I like to think that those who come back, do this to read the new posts, not to refresh their link.

: I agree with you to an extent, but this can lure more people to comment. But then author should be ready for a comment like “Thats Cool” too.

wow 5K hits is indeed alot! Sometimes i just don’t understand Analytics.. It says that I only had 53 unique visitors yesterday, yet my Alexa went below 100K yesterday. Things just don’t seem to match up.
Online Technology
April 30, 2007 at 8:18 pm
: Alexa rank depends how far you have reached. Meaning how may people around the globe have visited you. More you are know around the globe better alexa rank you will have
lyndonmaxewell
April 30, 2007 at 8:42 pm
yea, I was thinking how is it possible for a website that has a thousand uniques a day be worst off in Alexa ranking than mine. (For a day for that matter). Seems like Alexa or Analytics is weird in this case.
Online Technology
April 30, 2007 at 8:52 pm
: Its like if people are using alexa tool bar and surfing around they give points to the site and hence alexa ranking increases. Now There is an experimentation of installing the alexa script on the site itself. Hence every visit will execute that script and increase your alexa rank. Its funny though but This explains a lot of things. I have always wondered how alexa ranking is measures without having anything on the site itself. I used t thought that Alexa used to get the traffic details from hosting like in numbers but then I was wrong. Its the script that does that. Similar to Blogtopsites Image people put around. If you dont you are not there. This is ridiculous thought, but since its a standard best is to put it there.Might work.
Analytics, Is just a tool. To analyze your traffic and other things. Both are two different entity

Grace - I agree with you, and i’ve read many articles, they said wordpress is a powerfull CMS and fully help for SEO. and the next Joomla and Mambo…
JohnTP - I thought this is a good deal :). Many thank’s.

Online Technology - I’m sorry are you saying there’s a hack for executing the Alexa script from your website? I’m curious to hear more. I’m also guessing this violates TOS?

: Its not hack. Just install the script of alexa and thats it. It gets executed everytime and your traffic counts

Cool post John.
Robert: If you’re interested in reducing your Alexa number, you can get their little widget to install on your site, and display your number. The thinking is, every time your page is viewed, it reports to Alexa, so the figure is more accurate. Can’t hurt….

John, nice job giving comps to the readers… I like the 6 day comment refresh option. This is more balanced for regular readers, once in awhile readers and the once a month readers who play catch up. Great work.

Does having the Alexa widget has the same effect as viewing the website with the Alexa Toolbar .

: I guess yes but I am not very sure about it. Alexa widget will work for your site but having alexa toolbar will work for every site you visit, thats is you give points to every site you visit by alexa toolbar…Thats what I think

I think a week is a great idea. I’ll pay more attention now to get my comments in early. So if I understand correctly, at the beginning of the week you could get to the top commenter list with just a couple of comments. At least until someone else posts higher than you.

Robert Irizarry- Install the Alexa rank button on your blog for a few weeks and see if your Alexa rank increases. It helps me, that is why I still have it on my sidebar.
