WordPress Plugin: MyAvatars

ADVERTISEMENTS

MyAvatars is a plugin for WordPress that displays the readers MyBlogLog avatars besides their comments. In my opinion MyAvatars is much better than Gravatars as I think most of my commenters use MyBlogLog rather than Gravatars.

To test this, I activated Gravatars for some time on this blog and found that very few commenters were using Gravatars. When I activated MyAvatars, I was happy to see most of my readers faces :)

MyAvatars is easy to install, just download the file myavatars.zip, extract and copy it in your plugin directory preserving the folder name and then activate the plugin.

You will then have to edit your comments.php file and add the following code inside the comment’s loop

The disadvantage of using this plugin is that it can increase your page loading time by loading all those MyBlogLog Avatars :(

    John,

I noticed that today. I have been on your site for a little bit today catching up with your posts and saw that. That is a nice plugin to have. And yes… much better than Gravatars. BTW what is going on with Gravatar… are they going to get their act together? I haven’t heard any updates at all about Gravatar.com??? Do you have any info about that?

I’m starting to see this feature on more and more sites, and I like it. It gives each comment a little more personality.

Garry- I think Gravatar went offline for some months to improve their service and I heard that they are back now.

Napolux- Yes, I really liked MyAvatars

Ryan- I brought back the MBL widget only because you requested it :)

I dont use them, but I agree that it is better than Gravatars because it is consistent with the latest readers widget from mybloglog. Should give your blog a consolidated look.

It’s pretty nice, I have installed on sourcer.org but on my other blog (alexblogging.com) the avatars from mybloglog appread without doing anything… I really didn’t understand that. Anyway thanks for sharing this plugin John.

With the guess my blog income post, it refused to load in Firefox, and I think it was due to the number of posts and the MyBlogLog plugin. Anyone else having that problem?

Edit: Sorry about that, I put in the wrong post reference. I have been having problems with sites that use the plugin and have a lot of comments on a single post though, and I’m wondering if it’s due to the MyBlogLog avatar plugin and Firefox. Anyone else having that same problem?

This plugin is cool except for the page load time. Maybe its time to send a mail to MyBlogLog to do something about their server …

I removed the visitor widget and even my own plugin because of the load times. Hopefully things will get better when Yahoo takes over the hosting.

Over the last couple of months I’ve started to thin that MBL got lucky with being picked up by Yahoo, as the lack of improvement and the huge flaws in their communities that aren’t being fixed proves they are nothing special

Everton, I’m sure the move to Yahoo has created chaos over at MBL, so it’s best to be patient.

It’s easy to attack them, but they’ve got a good thing going and it’s best we give them time.

It would be nice if this plugin cached the avatars locally instead of grabbing them from mybloglog’s servers. It might reduce the load times a little.

the speed of mybloglog’s servers, whcih can get really bad at times, are why I removed the face tracking script. It’s not so bad with the avatars in comments though as they tend to be at the bottom of the page so they’ve typically loaded by the time a user gets to that part of the page

: it’s a great place for networking and meeting lots of other bloggers. I’d recommend it as a way to get some new traffic. It might not open a floodgate of visitors, but that could eventually transform to many more people if they like it and come back.

Hey guys, can one of you show me where to put this bad boy in the comments.php? I added mine and got it to display just fine, but for some reason in IE it gives me a “stack overflow”. I am assuming I am putting the coding in the wrong spot, but any help appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi there,
Does a “commenter” nned to be using MyBlogLog avatars to have an avatar? I guess what I’m asking is:

    - Does this allow a user to upload an avatar to the blog, if said user does not have a MyBlogLog avatar?

I was just wondering… since it would be nice to give them the opportunity to upload something when commenting.

    Thank you
