Will Using MyBlogLog get you banned from Adsense?

ADVERTISEMENTS

I first read it over at 901am and then at ShoeMoney that MyBlogLog tracks our visitors Ad clicks

Are you using Adsense and MyBlogLog together? Remember the rule about not being able to disclose the CTR rates to third parties? MyBlogLog is gathering this exact data on your site if you’re using the service. Using Adsense with MyBlogLog could get you banned from Adsense!

Just to be on the safe side I have removed MyBlogLog from this blog. What is your opinion on this?

    Wow…

That is an interesting thought. I use Google Adsense and do quite well with it. I also use MyBlogLog and in fact use their paid premium service for traffic stats analysis.

I would like to discover more information about this, so I will be sure to get the comment notifications on this post for sure.

John, have you contacted Google about this? Do you think I should remove MyBlogLog from my sites? I have the tracking code in my footer.php file, so virtually every page is being tracked.

Let me know more about your thoughts on this issue, I might end up doing the same as you. Thank for for bringing this to my attention.

Did you happen to contact Rafer or Eric about this also… if so, what was their response? Also, where did you hear about this issue initially?

    Hi,

Google has acknowledged this feature (without protest). And, as opposed to the click-through data that Google gives its customers, this info generated by MBL is collected independently of the AdSense program which doesn’t appear to be considered confidential information under their terms of service.

Please see this post , i hope it will clear some of your doubts.

Lovedeep- Thank you. After removing the MyBlogLog Widget and tracking code, I have noticed that my blog loads a lot faster, so I think I won’t be putting back their codes soon :D

I too removed the MBL code. I’ll be honest, I don’t like it (page loads quicker as you said). Just kind of kept it on to see who’s been online. It’s too spammy for my liking though, the whole service.

What I am unsure about and haven’t tested yet, but when users of MBL upload their photos, they can upload up to 1.5 meg file. And I don’t know if the thumb nails created are still the same file size? If so, then some sites like John’s could be pulling in close to 100 megs in pictures on every page the widget is on…

But again, I don’t know if the pics are reduced or not…

My site was pretty slow, so I just created a static page and put the widget there and provided a direct link to it from all my pages.

Earlier I have tried placing the MBL widget on Google pages to prevent the widget from making my pages load slowly, but the Tracking code still needs to be placed on the blog to make the widget work :(

I like to see the avatars. :D

Because the stats haven’t gone through Google’s fraud detector they won’t get you banned because you’re not divulging any confidential information (as an earlier post said).

I’ve got it on two of my blogs, and I think I notice more of a slowdown due to my Amazon wish list than I do the MBL. ;)

    Bring it back! :)

Yes, mybloglog takes lot of time to load, esp the pictures… So that’s why i put MBL as the last widget in the sidebar…

AdSense really seems to be very, very strict. Makes everyone kinda on edge about making sure to not do something that might upset Google. Sounds like this was just a rumor though.

The simple answer is no, MBL won’t get you banned from AdSense.

AdSense isn’t as strict as some people think, what exactly are they stopping you from doing?

Sodhi, the best thing to do would be to read the TOS. If you’re still unsure, email Google support and ask them… they will give you an answer.

After using MyBlogLog for a while, I found that it was not only ugly — the code also didn’t validate. MyBlogLog lasted about 4 days on my site.

Like some other people that commented here, I like the MBL widget, makes my site look ‘frindlyer’. My page hadn’t slowed down since I’ve placed the widget… Thanks for the AdSense info!

Well.. It would be bad if this is true. If it is, it looks like you can only choose one thing over another. Community or Money?
I wonder if anyone confirm this? John, where were you able to source this info from?

Is there any way to separate the code that tracks clicks and the reader widget? I like being able to see who’s visited my site and its nice to show a sense of community.

I’ve noticed that occassionally my site doesn’t display properly and I’ve had the feeling it was the widget that was doing it. I’ll have to test that out.

I’m anxiously awaiting John’s feedback on this. I only recently started using MyBlogLog and I would hate to think that I’m about to lose what hard earned pennies I’ve made from Adsense as a consequence. Meanwhile, I’m going to go ahead and contact Adsense about it.

Google got back to me and though its not a black and white answer it doesn’t sound good to me. Here is what they had to say:

“We understand that you would like to have more detailed reporting regarding your AdSense account. However, we do not endorse or encourage the use of any third-party tools for this purpose.

We recommend that you exercise caution when using third-party software to ensure that you do not violate the AdSense Terms and Conditions and that you do not inadvertently disclose sensitive personal information or
information about your site through the use of such software. Please note that AdSense participants are solely responsible for verifying that any tools or software used in conjunction with AdSense do not violate the AdSense Terms and Conditions.

Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.”

It sounds like Google is leaving the door open to bans based on the use of MyBlogLog. Off it goes.

  36. 36

    lyndonmaxewell

    March 7, 2007 at 8:12 am

I do not agree with their first sentence. What do they mean by more detailed reporting? Most of us using MBL are just using it to make new friends or beautify our site, isn’t it? I guess its ‘very well’ for them to say that it is our problem, no matter what happens.

  37. 37

    Robert Irizarry

    March 7, 2007 at 8:16 am

Lyndon – I don’t disagree. Google is leaving lots of room for interpretation on their part as well as leaving plenty of doubt in the minds of MyBlogLog users. It’s unfortunate but something we have to consider.

  38. 38

    Ashish Mohta

    March 7, 2007 at 8:24 am

The doubt is as your adsense click is getting tracked wether its valid or not?

  39. 39

    Roland

    March 7, 2007 at 9:40 am

well, google allways say the same thing. It says that for mybloglog, it says that for myspace, it says that for stumbleupon traffic. They have automatic answers in most of the cases. Don’t worry, the statistics in mybloglog see that you click on the adsense ads, but don’t see where it goes, google will not ban.

  40. 40

    lyndonmaxewell

    March 7, 2007 at 10:52 am

@ Robert So… Does that mean that we have to work on and follow up on MBL instead? I agree that there is some consideration on the part of users. Since I do not have adsense on my blog, MBL will still have a home for some time here.

  41. 41

    Robert Irizarry

    March 7, 2007 at 3:13 pm

Lyndon – I think that’s exactly what needs to happen. Of course, they’ll probably come back with just as nebulous an answer. That said, I’ll give it a try and report back.

Roland – The specific issue here is the ability to track Adsense clicks not the traffic that MyBlogLog might bring in although I understand what you’re getting at.

  42. 42

    Roland

    March 7, 2007 at 9:32 pm

Robert – Adsense is allways a problem, their TOS is very wide open. With their TOS they can ban a publisher if the publisher goes to the bathroom and don’t say first to google :) (it’s exaggerated but almost true). Using mybloglog cannot be a wrong thing, google must live with other services. I don’t think they will ban no one because mybloglog is too popular now, but they’ll never tell us that

  43. 43

    lyndonmaxewell

    March 7, 2007 at 10:36 pm

Yea, without any victims that they have ‘claimed’ so far, we will never realize the truth until that happens. Till then, that is.

MyBlog is a great viral tool and to tell you the truth I love the statistical data it provides. Ad tracking offers vital information. It takes the guess work out of where the most advertising dollars are being spent. To be perfectly honest I could care less what Yahoo! decides to do with that gathered information. Using MyBlogLog with Adsense with not get your account banned. Their data only shows you which ad type is being clicked most. No biggie.Man…Adsense ALWAYS has the advertising/publishing community walking on egg shells. Google is too powerful. LOL!
