WordPress 2.1 Released
ADVERTISEMENTSA week after WordPress 2.0.7 has been released, the long awaited WordPress 2.1 “Ella” (named for jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald) has been finally released. Besides over 550 bug fixes, WordPress 2.1 includes the following new features:
- Autosave makes sure you never lose a post again
- Tabbed editor allows you to switch between WYSIWYG and code editing instantly while writing a post
- The lossless XML import and export makes it easy for you to move your content between WordPress blogs.
- Visual editor now includes spell checking
- New search engine privacy option allows you to hide your blog from search engines like Google
- You can set any “page” to be the front page of your site, and put the latest posts somewhere else, making it much easier to use WordPress as a content management system
- Much more efficient and faster database code
- Sub-categories support for links in blogroll
- Redesigned login screen from the Shuttle project
- More AJAX to make managing things in WordPress instant
- Pages can now be drafts, or private
- WordPress Admin panel will now load faster and be more visually consistent
- The dashboard now instantly brings RSS feeds asynchronously in the background
- Comment feeds now include all the comments, not just the last 10
- Better internationalization and support for right-to-left languages
- The upload manager lets you easily manage all your pictures, video, and audio
- A new version of the Akismet plugin (2.0) is bundled
That’s a great list of new features and there are even little easter eggs hidden everywhere, I will let you know if I find any
The WordPress team has decided to shift to a more frequent release schedule like Ubuntu, with major releases coming several times a year. Another happy news for us is that the next version (2.2) will be coming out on April 23rd
I had tested the WordPress 2.1 RC locally and loved the new features. I also found everything to be faster than before and liked the new login screen. I did not find the new spell checker exciting as Firefox already helps me with it, but the new Autosave feature will be very useful to me
Anyways, I won’t be upgrading this WordPress blog to 2.1 now due to plugin compatibility issues. I am not sure how many plugins are WordPress 2.1 ready, but there will be many plugins that are not compatible. So I think I should wait for some more time.
What about you…Will you upgrade?

I like to leave these things at last a week, because nothing can be bug free on release. Plus, as you said, I wan to see what the score is with my favourite plugins first…
Looks like some great improvements though

Wp 2.1 is great.
I’ve upgraded and all my plugins seem to be working good.
The only one I had to disable was Tiger Administration.

John, I need some help. hopefully you can help me.
1) I am using technoblue….when someone comment on past post…it gives the msg “The post you are trying to comment on does not curently exist in the database”
2) Slider on top is not working well i.e when someone click it says “page not found” I therefore disable the rolling archive options
3) Is you technoblue compatible with WP 2.1?
Thanks and appreciate your help,

First of all John i must say your new layout is really nice
Now coming to wordpress 2.1, I dont think it is a good time for me to upgrade Sizlopedia as I have myself just started the blog and I m not aware of plugin compatibility issues
I think i should just move on for a bit and think about the upgrade in a matter of fortnite or so

I’ll wait at least a few days, as I’d rather let the experts find any bugs and problems first! And as I’m new to WP, my palms are still sweating from doing the upgrade to 2.0.7.

Speaking of the new layout, is it just me or is there a horizontal scroll at the bottom of the page in Firefox? Why is the page so big?

word press is keeping a list of know plugins that work and do not work, sadly I do not have the list on me right now. I think Darren posted a link to the list that does work. Or possibly at copyblogger.

Hey John .. I am using your technoblue theme (BTW LOVE IT) and went through the 2.07 upgrade without a problem. Thinking I may be Ok for 2.1, I tried the upgrade and got MYSQL error, specifically:
WordPress database error: [You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'GROUP BY year(post_date), month(post_date), dayofmonth(post_date)' at line 1]
SELECT DISTINCT post_date FROM GROUP BY year(post_date), month(post_date), dayofmonth(post_date)
I suspect it may be your theme as going to a default theme or just the plain k2 seems to have eliminated the problem (email me for details). I also noticed the UTW (ultimate tag warrior) also had some issues with the 2.1 upgrade.
Anyways John - I love your Technoblue theme … Are there any plans to make it compatible with 2.1?
thanks in advance
Frank

Hey John,
Why did you change the layout? Previous one was better!

Ryan-
At what resolution are you viewing this blog?
Ian, OptionPundit and Frank- I will try to make the theme compatible to 2.1 as soon as possible
Anshul- I wanted to try out Vizu and a few other things. And it was not possible with the previous 2 column layout.

Firefox scroll bar - I get this on FX, and not in IE, but in my case it’s mainly caused by my all-in-one sidebar icon bar, which is about 30 pixels wide. If I disable that, I still have the scroll, but only about 2 pixels.

The layout looks good now… I think it had something to do with the far right column being shown at the bottom of the page.

Ryan- Yes, I have seen that happen with some posts in IE. But in Firefox the layout displays well for me.

John: I’ve been working on getting triplek2 just the way I want it before I open up my blog. Then I decided to go with 2.1, figuring better now than later when I might have an couple of visitors. A few plugins crapped out, but that was really for the best. I was getting pretty plugged up. I look forward to your 2.1 Triplek2 update. Thanks for the theme, playing with it has a great way to learn some basic css and WP.

hello… I am using your TripleK2 theme and love it! thanks a ton.
Anyways, I’m trying to use Ultimate Tag Warrior, and I get the following error message on tag pages:
WordPress database error: [You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'GROUP BY year(post_date), month(post_date), dayofmonth(post_date)' at line 1]
SELECT DISTINCT post_date FROM wp_posts INNER JOIN wp_post2tag p2t on wp_posts.ID = p2t.post_id INNER JOIN wp_tags t on p2t.tag_id = t.tag_id WHERE 1=1 AND ((post_type = ‘post’) AND (post_status = ‘publish’ OR post_status = ‘private’)) AND t.tag IN (’bettman’) GROUP BY ID GROUP BY year(post_date), month(post_date), dayofmonth(post_date)
any idea what may be the cause of this?
thanks for all of your great work!

I think I fixed my problem, but I’m going to need approval I was having the same problem as above on my category pages (database error)…
and I just found the following piece of code in /app/includes/info.php on line 132:
$num_days = $wpdb->query(”SELECT DISTINCT post_date FROM $from_where GROUP BY year(post_date), month(post_date), dayofmonth(post_date)”);
I removed this piece of code and re-upload the info.php file, and my error message has gone away.
Is this okay to do? Do you think it will mess anything else up?
thank you for your help!
