How to Position AdSense Ads on a Blog
ADVERTISEMENTSGoogle AdSense is the main source of income for several bloggers looking to earn money through blogging. However many earn less from it due to their poorly positioned Ads.
Here are some tips to improve your AdSense earnings by positioning your Ads well on your blog:
Single Post pages
On Single pages, place a Large Rectangle (336×280) just above the content so that your readers will notice them. The large rectangle is the best performing AdSense format as they are wide.
For longer entries, try placing a blended Medium Rectangle (300 x 250) into your post using AdSense Deluxe. I would recommend you use a service like CrazyEgg to find out the most clicked spot on your blog post and place your Ad right next to it.
A Banner (468 x 60) just before your comment box is also a good place to put your Ads as your readers may notice them when they try to comment.
Homepage
In my early days with AdSense, I used to place my Ad right on top (even before the posts) after a short intro. Though this increased my CTR (click through rate), it used to be annoying for my readers.
So I would recommend you place a Large Rectangle (336 x 280) right after the first post. This page shows you how to place your AdSense Ads after the first post on your homepage.
Header
I have placed a Link unit near my Menu as Link units look like menus themselves and will help in increasing my CTR (click through rate). By adding a link unit near your menu, you will get more clicks than you thought was possible.
You could also try a Leaderboard (728 x 90) and see if it works for you.
Sidebar
Ads on sidebars usually don’t perform as well as the Ads near the content as that is where readers focus on. But it is best that you try them on your blog to see if they work for you.
You could try a Wide Skyscraper (160×600) or a vertical Link unit on your sidebar, but remember to place them at the top so that your readers notice them.
Footer
Ads on footer has not worked well for me but it is best that you try them on your blog to see if they work for you. Try using a Leaderboard (728 x 90).
From my experience, I find that Ads above the content performs the best. However, the best way to find the right Ad Position for your blog is to experiment in a trial and error method and track your Ad performance using Channels.
Remember: AdSense allows you to place only 3 Ad units and 1 Link unit on a single page, so keep that in mind when you experiment different Ad placements.

Seriously John Before reading your awesome tips for boosting AdSense revenue I use to earn only 3-4$ per day from my site.
But now I earn nearly 45-50$ per day by using the AdSense beautifier plugin that u suggested and placing the ads near most-clicked points (used CrazyEgg for it as You recommended)
Thanks alot

link unit or ad unit?

Improve from 3-4$ to 45-50$ is great, but i think that mean that you put your ads in wrong place in first place.
I think the one and only big reason for more $ is traffic and it is very hard to have it.
Anyway i am still fighting with ads on my blog but i don’t think this is the biggest problem. The big problem is my ads are for small $, i mean my blog topic is not so great…. and i don’t have so big traffic, only (or maybe no) 1.000 visits per day.
Anyway good luck to all google ads fighters

Dj Flush- Wow…Congrats! I am very happy that my tips helped you
Does your Banners above Related Posts on Single pages perform well?
Some tips for you:
1. use same color for the AdSense text and URL,
2. try blending a vertical Link unit on your navigation menu
btw, how much unique traffic do you get per day?

Amey jahagirdar-
What did you mean? Both have it’s own use. Large Rectangle right above my content performs the best for me. Second best performer for me is the Link units below my Menu.

Peter- I think you face the same problem as me- getting Blog related Ads which pay less. There is nothing we can do about it as that is what we blog about (WordPress Themes, plugins, blogging tips, etc)
btw, how much unique traffic do you get?

Hey John, i got only 1000 per day.
But look here, some guy give me today this tips:
http://forums.digitalpoint.com.....stcount=11
They are great in my opinion and i try to make this work.
I try to install your theme with sidebars on both sides and then setup it with my actually theme but i got this error:
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare k2sbm_load() (previously declared in /home/coxis/public_html/silentbits/wp-content/themes/k2/options/app/sbm-stub.php:5) in /home/coxis/public_html/silentbits/wp-content/themes/TripleK2/app/includes/sbm-stub.php on line 16
Now i don’t know how to fix that

Amazing Dj Flush
I think John mean that warez sites can’t use google ads… but i am not sure if this is true.

Dj Flush- I did not mean the hits, do you mind sharing how much unique traffic you get per day?
Also, isn’t it against AdSense TOS to run AdSense Ads on a Warez blog? Perhaps you should confirm with the AdSense team about this.

Ok i search and you cannot use google at warez sites.

Peter-
Before installing TripleK2 did you click ‘Uninstall K2′ for TechnoBlue (available in K2 options)?
What did you mean by ’setup it with my actually theme’. You tried to use the CSS you use for TechnoBlue for TripleK2 ?

i don’t like to use adsense beatifier, since hacked “adsense-injection” can do the same thing automatically.
anyway, thanks for the tip john.

In my opinion, bloggers must always change his/her ads position because our readers are almost the same people everyday. So, we must change our ads position frequently. At least, let them feel something special to attract their attention on our ads.
Just my 2 cents.

My site is still new and not that popular. No adsense for me as yet. I’ll soon join Adsense once my site gets popular. But I’m confused a bit. Why should one keep changing the ad positions continuously? Is’nt that unprofessional?

Yee John, i was playing with adsense format. I think now they have very nice position but now i need to add more traffic to my blog to make more $ from it and to post on my blog to more people. If you have some suggestion for my blog SilentBits i would be thankful.

Bong- Changing your Ad position once in a while may help you reduce Ad Blindness.

Peter- Try replacing the Skyscraper on your sidebar with a blended vertical Link unit and see how it performs.
Try a Banner just before your comment box.
Also I think you need to separate your Leaderboard and RSS image with a visible border.
Peter
November 19, 2006 at 5:14 pm
About that Leaderboard and RSS i’ve email google to ask about this.
Banner before comments maybe work on your site because you have many comments, i don’t
Anyway thanks for your tips.

OK, the answer is to add that border to it

I use the adsense-injection plugin to rotate the location and style of the ad. I have seen an increase but I think its partly from that & from a constant increase in traffic.
