Encouraging Your First Time Commenters

ADVERTISEMENTS

Shawn Blanc from Fighting to Stay Awake had got his ‘quick tip’ submitted on Problogger.net today. It’s a simple tip that I used to do in my first few months of blogging -

When someone comments on your site for the first time, send them a thank-you email

Mailing your first time commenters really helps in building a loyal readership. Your readers will feel noticed and this can encourage them to come back to your blog and comment frequently.

Though this tip can be easy to apply on new blogs with few commenters, it will be hard to do so on blogs that get a lot of comments.

What do you say? Have you tried mailing your first time commenters with a ‘Thank you’? Did it help?

I dont think that would help
It looks like you’re begging for more comments.
Instead .. keep track of their blog and post relevant comments there.. Thats more useful.

This tip does help. I used to do it when I had started this blog. It helped me get some of those first time commenters to come back and comment regularly. Try it out and let me know :)

    Another idea:
Well I am using this trick and also I put latest commentators list in sidebar, I have noticed that this does help to increase the viewership and loyalty.

The Show Top Commentators plugin for WordPress can help you encourage readers to comment more often.

I think Vivek is right, it will be good if you post some comments to their blog

I like to respond to all comments. I think its important for readers to realize that there’s interest in what they have to say.

In my experience people are reluctant to leave the first comment on a post, but after that you get more & more.

My attempt to resolve this is to simply make an agreement with some friends and related blogs to place the first comment and get the ball rolling.

I’m always comfortable commenting on your blog because you’ve always got a list of comments! :)

The problem with sending personal email or thanking them via reply comment or putting their name in top commentators blog is that most of the unknown commentators are spammers, which will lead to more spam. That’s why I think twice before moderating newbies comment.
