New features for Google Talk

ADVERTISEMENTS

Google released a new version of Google Talk that introduces several more features

File transfer: You can share any type of file, any size and any number of times at faster speeds as Google Talk makes a direct connection to your friend’s computer whenever possible. You can also drag and drop one or more files directly onto a chat window.

When you drop photos smaller previews automatically appear right inside the chat window. The previews adjust to the size of your chat window, so just enlarge the window when you want to see more detail.

Voicemail: The feature I have always wanted, you can now leave voicemails for any of your Google Talk contacts when they don’t answer a call. You can even record voice notes and send them to anyone (even to people not running Google talk) by just adding their email address to your contact list .

Music status sharing: This is another cool feature. It let’s you show your friends what music you are currently listening to as your status message.

As a user of Google Talk, this is an exciting change for me. They’ve lacked many of the staple features of an instant messenger for awhile now, its nice to see they intend to compete. I was pondering trying to get all of my friends to switch IM services.

I am still unsatisfied with Google Talk because it does not have smileys :-(

I couldn’t agree more. My problem is, I generally show allegiance to one company, and for the most part, I use Google Services (Google Calendar, Google Analytics, GMail, Google Maps, etc.). The other fact is that most everyone I know uses Google Chat over the other big 3 (AIM, WLM, YM) so I’m kind of stuck with it for now.

I keep hoping they integrate with the others at some point so you can just pick your favorite one, rather than being stuck with whichever one a majority of the people you IM use.

    Good discussion!

It would be so awesome if people actually used Google Talk. Personally, I used Psi with an MSN transport, but most people just won’t move from MSN IM. If they would, I’d just create a Google Talk account and start chatting. Sigh.

BTW, Psi does have emoticons. I believe Exodus (the Jabber IM I used before moving to Linux) does too. The point: don’t waste your time on Google’s limited client unless you have no technical knowledge whatsoever.
