How to reduce memory usage of Yahoo Messenger

ADVERTISEMENTS

With every new version, Yahoo! Messenger seems to be using more and more memory than the previous versions. With the addition of the Plugin feature in the latest version, things have got even more bulky.

Currently, Yahoo! Messenger uses about 41,164K memory on my system. Based on your usage of the messenger, the memory usage increases and decreases.

Here are some very simple tips to decrease memory usage of Yahoo Messenger:

  1. Uninstall Plugins: The amount of memory Plugins use depend on the number of plugins you install. To uninstall plugins from the Plug-ins Manager, go to ‘Actions>Choose a plugin…’ and click the ‘My Plug-ins’ tab. Decide which Plugins you don’t need and then click ‘Stop’ and the icon near to it to uninstall
  2. Remove Ads: You can save some memory and bandwidth by removing Yahoo! Messenger’s Ads. You can find how to do it here
  3. Switch to Classic Skin: If you prefer performance to appearance, you may switch to the classic skin of Yahoo! Messenger. You can do this by going to ‘Messenger>Change Skin…’ and select Classic from there.

This is all I could think of right now. I will let you know if I find any other methods to reduce memory usage of Yahoo Messenger. Do you know any other methods?

removing all the Content Tabs helps a little bit too,
but still the memory usage is huge for such a simple program… (latest version of yahoo messenger uses minimum 45,000 K!!! )

for me the best solution was to switch to Trillian, works better than the similar multi IM programs and uses 1,000 K - 5,000 K memory.

my yahoo runs on 125,000k on average… thats a whole lot more than anyones mentioned here… so what does that mean for me ?.. it also makes my cpu usage 100%… slows it down to nothing… any more suggestions for me because i tried all that was mentioned with no luck whatsoever..

What ii’d like to know is how to reduce the CPU usage. there is very clearly a serious bug in this program. No way should Messenger be using 25-90% of my CPU on an AMD300o with 2GB of ram. It bogs the sysmem down and makes the computer unusable. I had to go back to version 7

I also am disheartened by Yahoo! — where colleagues and clients are all on.

I tried Meebo — a web-based solution and I like that it uses standard browser (FF/IE, etc.) and takes up way less memory.

If you don’t like Trillian, or work at a place where Yahoo! isn’t allowed, try this:

I use trillian pro always. 3 yrs ago, i had tried Gaim but it was buggy at that time. So i gave up gaim and never tried it again. However, I don’t like trillian much. The smileys suck! Still i am left with no option as YM is such a memory hogger. Use YM only when some frenz ask me to play pool. :D

Try GAIM now…it’s very light, and has all Yahoo smileys, including hidden ones

I need to run YM for the whole day on 256MB RAM PC,
but running YM along with heavy memory application
like Adobe Photoshop will make the whole system screw up!

Its time for alternative messenger client ;)
I switch to EasyMessage … YM / MSN / ICQ alternative all in one pack.

EasyMessage only consume 4MB or RAM.

Uhm, there’s not much you can do for a memory hog like Yahoo; other than try getting YaZak. YaZak is great, and it’s light. I don’t have the link for it, but I’m sure you could google it. Yahoo doesn’t seem to be a problem, and I’m running 356MB of RAM.
