FreeUndelete Recovery Software

ADVERTISEMENTS

Very often we delete a file only to realize later on that the wrong file was deleted. There are many tools that help us recover deleted files but I would like to mention here a freeware. FreeUndelete is a freeware data recovery program for files accidentally deleted on a NTFS and FAT32 file systems.

FreeUndelete

The program is very simple to use. Just select a drive, press a button and the program locates files that can be undeleted after thoroughly scanning the disk. FreeUndelete 2.0 features a comprehensive interface, which allows user to sort the files according to their efficiency (good, average, poor). Users can set various filters on file name, extension or location for convenient browsing of scan results.

How is File Restoration possible?

When you delete a file, Windows just marks the area occupied by that file as free and ready to accept data. Unless the area has already been overwritten, it still holds the contents of the deleted file. Due to this fact it is possible to restore deleted files.

What do I do when I accidently delete a file?

When you accidently delete a file and need to restore it, minimize any activity on the disk you deleted the file from. Copying files or installing programs on the disk can damage the contents of the deleted files.

Now start FreeUndelete and try searching for the file.

Can I stop deleted files from being Restored?

Yes, there are programs that let you do this. System Mechanic and TuneUp Utilities provide such tools. But these programs are not freeware. I currently do not know of any freeware that lets us do this. Please let me know if you have come across such a freeware.

Update: Simple File Shredder is a freeware that helps you prevent your files being restored.

John I found another restoration utility which I have started to use now. It has both undelete function and simple data shredding function and moreover the size is only 229kb.
