TuneUp’s RegistryCleaner is the best

ADVERTISEMENTS

Over the past years I have tried several registry cleaners but nothing compares to the Regisry Cleaner by TuneUp. The program is both user friendly and powerful at the same time.

You can use it to quickly and thoroughly remove the unneeded entries left over when you install and remove programs and when you work with your computer every day.

Cleaning up your registry database frees your system of unneeded data and errors so that it can work better and more quickly.

After your registry is analyzed for problems, you can individually view each of the problems found and call up a detailed description. If you wish, you can also have all problems corrected automatically.

All changes to your system are monitored by TuneUp RescueCenter and can be undone with a few mouse clicks.

To start the program, select ‘Clean up & Repair’ category in the Start Center and click TuneUp RegistryCleaner.

Once the program is started, a wizard is opened automatically in which you can choose between two options for scanning the registry.

The option Complete scan analyzes the entire registry and all system files. If you select Choose tests, you can specify yourself which categories should be analyzed by TuneUp RegistryCleaner.

I strongly recommend you to select the ‘Complete scan’ because it helps to clean the entire registry of any invalid data it might have. Now click ‘Next’ to begin analysing your registry.

Scanning
As you might have noticed the program scans your registry for problem on various categories such as

  • ActiveX and COM: ActiveX/COM objects were found that are based on libraries that are no longer available on your system.
  • Sounds: Some sounds refer to sound files that are no longer on your system.
  • Application paths: Some of the application paths in the registry point to directories that no longer exist.
  • Startup: Some of the programs that are scheduled to be loaded at startup cannot be found.
  • File types: Some file types refer to programs that are no longer available on your system.
  • Shared files: The registry contains references to files that were used by multiple applications that no longer exist on this system.
  • Help files: The registry contains entries for help files that are no longer available on the system.
  • Fonts: References were found to fonts that are no longer available on the system.
  • Software: Some of the programs listed under Add and Remove Programs in the Control Panel do not have an uninstall program. These entries will not work.
  • Start menu: Some of the shortcuts in the Start menu point to files that are no longer available on the system, and references in the registry point to folders that have been removed from the Start menu. This is one of the options that I have not seen on other registry cleaners
  • Shortcuts: Some of the shortcuts on your system point to missing targets.
  • History lists: Some entries in the history list for standard dialogs point to files that no longer exist.

As you can see, deleted files can leave behind many invalid entries in your registry. TuneUp RegistryCleaner finds these orphaned entries and can delete them.

You may now choose between manual or automatic cleaning. For automatic cleaning, click ‘Start Cleaning’ to have TuneUp RegistryCleaner do its job - correcting all of the problems that were found.

That’s it! Your registry is now free from all kinds of invalid stuff that can cause errors and slow down your system. Cleaning the registry also reduces the size of registry thereby speeding up Windows startup.

You can also use RegistryDefrag under ‘Optimize & Improve’ to correct the physical errors in your registry and defragment it. This helps you in reducing the size of registry thereby speeding up Windows startup.

TuneUp Utilities 2006 has many other tools that you can play with to boost your system performance and speed. It optimizes the performance of your computer, solves problems and helps you to customize your system to suit your needs.

:!: Please do note that TuneUp Utilities is not freeware. If you would like to try it, download a free trial version from their site.

RegCleaner is one of my favorites too because of it’s ease of use but it’s not as good in cleaning the registry as TuneUp is.

For example, uninstall an unwanted program and clean your registry with RegCleaner and then try TuneUp’s Registry Cleaner. You will still find unwanted entries!

Tune Up’s registry cleaner is OK but I have had more success with cleaning up my registry by making use of StompSoft’s Registry Repair (http://www.stompsoft.com/registry-repair.html). I’m not sure why, but I think that various registry cleaners are more engaged on certain aspects of the registry than others; because of this it often appears that while one cleaner sees a entry as a problem another cleaner won’t.

Michele, I know where you’re coming from. I have used several registry cleaners before I started using the one that you mentioned.

Essentially, I pretty much arrived at the same conclusion that you had reached. I does seem that many registry editors are programmed very aggressively. I often wonder is this is the bait that gets the consumer to jump. I.E. “You have 600 errors would you like them fixed.” Who wouldn’t, except that the reality is that they probably only have a few hundred and all of those others that were deleted will be needed at a later time for another program. I guess that’s just the way it is. Though I’m glad that I have the software that I’ve got now. Not too hot, not too cold, but just right. :)
