8 tips on increasing blog traffic by improving content
ADVERTISEMENTSYou may also like to read part1 and part 2 of this series on increasing your blogs traffic.
Recently during a chat conversation with my friend Deep, I asked him how he manages to get 1000+ traffic to his blog daily. He replied (thanking Google) that content plays the main role- write what your readers would like to read.
But how do you know what a reader likes to read? Besides different people have different tastes. What I have to say is that- whatever content you write, pay attention to your writing style.
Here are some more tips on increasing your blog traffic by improving your style on writing contents:
- Use Attractive Titles: Using attractive titles is one way of getting readers to visit your blog from Search Engines and Feeds. Also, use keywords in your title that relate to the post.Use numbers in your title just like I have done with this post. Using titles like ‘20 tips on…’, ‘6 ways to…’, ‘13 common weblogging mistakes‘, etc can help you to grab readers attention and visit your blog.
- Be Unique: Readers come to your blog to read something different. They will not come just to read what they have read on other blogs. Making your blog stand out from other blogs both in content and design is important if you want to have repeat visitors.
- Link to the source: If you post about some interesting news that you just read on your favorite News site, link to it (the source). Chances are readers from that news blog will visit your blog from the pingback on the site. Also, it helps make your content look informative.I once got 500+ extra traffic just by linking to a post on Google’s Blog!
- Write your content using lists: Write tutorials that walk your readers through a process that teaches them how to achieve a goal they might have. Tutorials have more chance of getting bookmarked in Social Bookmarking sites which will get you plenty of readers and links from many blogs.
- Don’t change your blogs topic: Once you choose what you blog about on your blog, don’t change it. Your readers come to read posts on that topic. Writing posts on a different topic will not look good for your blog.
- Write on Technological stuff: I have noticed many times that writing more on Technology related stuff, gives my blog a better chance of being bookmarked. It might be because users of bookmarking sites are mostly tech savy.
- Link to your older posts: Don’t expect your readers to have been reading your posts from the time you started your blog. So next time, when you write about things you have written previously, link to them. This helps in increasing your blogs page views and also to keep readers.

Hi John,
Derek Gehl of Enterpreneur.com has some tips:
1. Great content
2. Regular Updates
3. Distinct personal voice
Needless to say that regular updates can’t be a substitute for good content.

I agree, Regular updates are important but cannot be a substitute for good content.
When it comes to Content, quality is more important than quantity

hi john
I want to add a contact me and archives page on my site . Which plugin should i use .
johntp
April 5, 2006 at 12:01 pm
Madhur- For Contact Plugin, I use PXS Mail Form.
It creates a mail form with multi part verification, various messages and an auto redirect on successful send. Recent updates include referrer checks and exploit management. Also, allows the sender to CC themselves.
Doesn’t your WordPress Theme have an Archives page?
You can also use Extended Live Archives.
This plugin implements a dynamic archive which allows you to dig into your blogs archives in a fast and efficient way, without having to reload the page as you explore.
Check my Archives page to see this plugin in action.

Great article. Personally, Technorati never sent me much traffic. I tried tagging my post for a while, but the results were barely worth it (I had 2-3 additional hits). With more then 200 blogs pointing to me, I tought it would improve my visibility in technorati, but it’s not the case. Anyways, Following most of the tips you gave here, I went to 10-20 hits per day to almost 2000 in barely 5 months of existance. The recipee of my success? Digg, Del.icio.us, reddit, meneame (in spanish), and shoutwire.
A lot of people underestimate shoutwire, but they are wrong When you get listed on there, you also automaticly appear on torrentspy.com and ircspy.com, and both of these sites are VERY popular..
Cheers!

I had over 40000 hits because one of my article was in the top 5 of the week.. There are A LOT more user then you think on there, people just don’t “shout” the story as much as on digg.. DEFINITLY try to get a story on there

I actually think that content is kind of king. Which leads me to agree, and yet, not really disagree at the same time, if that’s not impossible.

phlogr- Content is King. There’s no doubt about that. Quality content can get you traffic even long after it has be published. This article was posted at the beginning of this month and still gets me a lot of traffic
