Must-have Extensions for Firefox
ADVERTISEMENTSFirefox is one my favorite browsers after Opera. One of the things it is well known for is the support for extensions. Here I have listed out a few extensions for Firefox that will make you really say “Firefox rocks!”.
First of all…What are Extensions? Extensions are browser addons that can greatly enhance your browsing experience. Installing them is simple as Firefox has an inbuilt installer for extensions. All you have to do is click on the download link and the extension organiser does the rest.
Must-have Extensions for Firefox
- Session Saver: As you might already know, closing the Firefox window closes all the tabs. They do not re-open the next time you start Firefox (reminds you of Opera?).Session Saver restores the browser to exactly where you last left it.The settings can be altered from Tools>SessionSaver>Settings. Chose Expert mode for better details, and put a checkmark next to ‘Every startup from’,'Existing windows’,'And tabs’,'When restoring, join multiple windows into one’,'Save a session-backup on shutdown’, and ‘Allow me to “re-open” closed tabs’.
- PDF download: Firefox takes time to respond, and sometimes even hangs, and when you click on a link that opens a PDF document, especially if it’s a large PDF. PDF download opens a dialog box that asks you if you want the link to open in the default PDF viewer, or download it to your hard disk, or view it as HTML. This is a great extension, especially if such options are not available on the Web Page itself.
- DownThemAll: Firefox has an inbuilt download manager, but you have probably noticed that it sometimes hangs when you try to resume a download. DownThemAll is the solution- it can even resume downloads from previous Firefox Sessions.
- FoxClocks: FoxClocks shows the time in cities around the world by synchronizing with a database of time zones and daylight saving. It displays a message asking you to choose from 100-odd cities. It then displays the current time at the chosen cities in the status bar. You can even use FoxClock as a toolbar in your browser instead of displaying the times in the status bar.
- FireFTP: If you regularly browse FTP sites, then you definitely need FireFTP, an FTP client that greately eases file browsing and copying. You can right-click on an FTP link and then choose to open it with FireFTP. FireFTP opens your machine’s file browser on the left pane and the FTP site on the right pane of the browser. You can even drag and drop files between the two.
- ReminderFox: Using ReminderFox you can set To-Dos and reminders within the browser. After installation, a ribbon-like icon will be displayed in the lower-right corner of the browser.Right-click on this icon to access your To-Dos and reminders. Right-clicking the icon also gives you all the options you will need to add items, change settings and so on.
- Flashblock: Flash-based ads can be very irritating, and also takes up your bandwidth. The extension will appear whenever it detects and blocks Flash content. The blocked content is replaced with a play button, so you can choose to play the blocked Flash-based content.
- IE Tab: This extension is for IE lovers and for those IE-only Web sites. It loads Internet Explorer into Firefox tabs.To use IE Tab go to View>Toolbars>Customize, a dialog box with a few buttons appears. Drag the button that looks similar to IE’s “e” symbol and place it on the Toolbar.Open a tab and click on this button to change the browser’s engine to IE. If you want a few selected pages to open in IE automatically, go to Tools>IE Tab Options . In the dialog box that opens, enter the site name and click Add. Now everytime you enter this web site in the address bar, Firefox will automatically open it in IE Tab.
Know any other good extensions for Firefox? Feel free to share them here via comments.

Here are few more good extensions… which are my favorites
Faster Fox
Fasterfox allows you to tweak many network and rendering settings such as simultaneous connections, pipelining, cache, DNS cache, and initial paint delay.
Dynamic speed increases can be obtained with the unique prefetching mechanism, which recycles idle bandwidth by silently loading and caching all of the links on the page you are browsing.
A popup blocker for popups initiated by Flash plug-ins is also included.
* Various locale updates and bugfixes
* Compatible with Firefox 1.5.0.1
Download FasterFox
Colorful Tabs
The most beautiful yet the simplest add-on that makes a strong colorful appeal. Colors every tab in a different color and makes them easy to distinguish while beautifying the overall appearance of the interface. An essential.
With: A better border and highlight for the selected tab
Download Colorful Tabs
Tabbrowser Preferences
This extension is an enhancement for the basic tab controls provided in Firefox 1.0. It replaces the existing user interface with a new, more visible user interface, and also includes UI for other hidden features that are part of the browser, as well as features provided explicitly by the extension.

Adsense Notifier
Displays your Adsense earnings on the statusbar.
Download Adsense Notifier
Google Toolbar
The most important one for me. It displays the Google Toolbar.
Download Google Toolbar
These extensions I use it myself and thanks to John for letting me know the other good extensions.

i think the google toolbar is one of the dummest plugins. you can search google simply by doing the keyboard combination:
ctrl+k
IMO there is nothing else on the toolbar that is worth the cost of having 20px less space available to view a webpage (the PR bar is not a valid reason either since it has no meaning anymore in terms of SEO).
