Let’s Chat!

ADVERTISEMENTS

I found this cool AJAX Shoutbox plugin for WordPress today. I liked it so much that I added it to my site (you can find it on the sidebar of my homepage). The plugin uses AJAX, a technology that allows information to be transmitted to the server without the user refreshing the page.

So what makes this plugin special is that your users can carry out live chats from your blog without having to refresh the page. It’s kind of like instant messaging!

The plugin currently works in IE6, Firefox, Safari, Konqueror, and Opera 8.01

Features

  • Uses AJAX - No need to refresh ever. Other people’s comments will appear in real time.
  • Wordpress admin panel that allows you to control colors, update times, and edit/delete comments.
  • Displays the time of the last message at the top. Messages have a rollover-able title that shows how long ago the comment was made.
  • Any words with “http://” in them will be converted into hyperlinks. Wordpress smileys also work.
  • Wordpress users that are logged in automatically get their nickname filled in, and other users’ names get stored for later use.
  • No iFrames, ever. 100% valid XHTML strict

Installation

  • Put the folder labeled “wordspew” in your plugins folder. This is located at /wp-content/plugins/
  • Browse to your plugins manager in the admin section of your blog. Activate Jalenack’s Wordspew plugin. This will automatically create a table in your database that the plugin will use for its content
  • Now you have to choose where you want the shoutbox to show on your blog. I have put it on my sidebar. Then place this code:
    < ?php jal_get_shoutbox(); ?>
  • You can edit the look and functionality of your shoutbox by browsing to your admin panel and clicking on Manage

Note: The plugin will only work in WordPress blogs version 1.5 or higher. So upgrade if you are using an older version.

Where the heck is chat? ??

BTW, John a good use of K2 in your site. First time I viewed it with images and the whole site gave in me one word only “NEAT!!” simple and neat… The banner is great IMO!

Though the font is too small the website is very very …. neat.. LOL! :D
And hmm…. Are users automatically subscribed to a comment?

Actually Chrono, I have disabled the AJAX Shoutbox plugin because I received many spam and not much users were using it.

Also, a funny thing, the Link Category Names such as Most Popular, friends, etc does not show when the plugin is enabled.

So I had to disable it. I will enable if you want

BTW, Glad you liked my banner

And hmm…. Are users automatically subscribed to a comment?

What did you mean? I have set the default option to subscribe

That’s irritating if I get an email for every comment.. It would be better if you had a small checkbox below which users can check if they want to subscribe to a comment.t

Hi, Chrono - Seems you have a lot of things disabled in your browser.

There is a small checkbox below which users can check if they want to subscribe to a comment.

It’s just that the checkbox will be ticked by default.

Hey there, noticed your article about the ajax shoutbox and thought you might be interested in a plugin I just released called XDTalk. It add realtime instant messaging to you site between your registered visitors, as well as tells you who is on the site at that moment. Go here: http://www.xdweb.net/ to get it.

Hi johntp, yes i know the post is old, but since you published it, i modified the Andrew’s shoutbox by adding a spam filter, a sound alert and some others cool stuff. i suggest that you have a look on it, by yourself, on my blog ;).

    Amicably, Pierre
