Instant Messaging through Google AdSense Ads
ADVERTISEMENTSOnce while I was reading some posts on Problogger.net, I came across this interesting AdSense Ad by John Chow.
The Ad was so different that I was tempted to click it and visit John’s blog. A few weeks later I started seeing the same type of AdSense Ad on this blog too.
And then a few more days later, I came across a post by Quick Online Tips, where he mentioned that he too saw the same type of Ad by John Chow on his blog.
It seems John Chow was inspired by similar AdSense Ads displaying on his blog.
Darren posts in comments here that John has been doing such type of Ads for a few months now and caused a lot of interest among his readers.
yeah - John’s been doing that at PB for months now and he’s caused a lot of interest among my readers - every day someone emails me about it!
Even without Darren saying, we all know that John has been getting good number of clicks to his site from all the sites he has advertised in this way. Great idea by John indeed.
I found a similar Ad on Digital Inspiration too
Just like John Chow said on one of his posts, this maybe a new way for sites to communicate with each other - Instant Messaging through Google Ads!
Have you seen similar AdSense Ads before? And were you tempted to click on them?

Hey, John, I’ve been seeing this for months now, on Steve Pavlina’s blog. An ad called “I love Steve Pavlina” pops up in every post. And guess what ? Its John Chow too.
I think this cannot be called something as Instant Messaging. Its just another marketing trick. He is trying to earn some good karma from people so that he can improve his site. If you need to know more about “Blogging is Karma”, check this out :-

And, its a contest entry. So, please rate it 5 stars in the rating counter down below. Anyway, your blog is looking good except for the short time inactiveness. Keep at it, dude.

I first saw this with John Chow, and now it seems to be creeping up all over the place. And yes, I am tempted to click on the ads, especially when they say “hey, you read this blog, we’re cool, too, so come see us!”.
I just wonder how much it costs to get those spots.

I guess its based on thousand per impressions. Its costly and will be good for sites having high number of page views.
More over you got to find out the the channel name ( if they have specified)so that you can target it right.

Thats the whole point, John. In the world of Social Media and Web 2.0, personal relationship and friendship counts a lot. And, moreover, he gains good karma by doing it. Really nice trick if you ask me.

John Chow’s a clever guy
I don’t see any adsense ads ever, due to adblock plus, so they’d be wasted on me….

Chris Lodge- I too use Adblock plus and don’t often see AdSense Ads until I disable it on purpose.

I think we should all stop using Ad blockers. We are digging the hole for our own demise. Ad blockers block ads and you are cheating a webmaster who is waiting for some money.
And, if everyone starts using Ad blockers, we’ll never survive. I think its kinda unfair :(.

Just a quick FYI: don’t try this on a forum. The CTR is way too low to make it worthwhile (the eyes are looking elsewhere).

If look here you’ll see that I tried a week before your post to formalize this kind of advertising, and give a name to it. My opinion, as stated in my post too, is that the ad is so good because it transmit a positive message. Positive message is always good ;-).

This is a neat trick, however I can only imagine what the ad cost. Obviously the smaller blogs would cost less, but I can only guess at what an ad like this on problogger must run.
Regardless, neat trick!

Hey John. You know everyone could buy CPM on any adsense web site via adwords. So, can u or those has CPM adsense ads on their web sites learn who advertises on ur or their web site? Are there ways to learn this?

How much do you think John ended up spending to get those ads on Darren’s site? Couldn’t have been cheap.
