TripleK2 - A Three Column K2 Mod for WordPress

ADVERTISEMENTS

TripleK2 is a theme based on 3K2, a theme by Hakan Aydin, which is based on the most popular WordPress theme- K2.

TripleK2 - A Three Column K2 Mod for WordPress

The reason I released this theme is that I wanted to have a 3 column theme with sidebars on both sides and I found 3K2 as a good choice but it was based on an old version of K2.

So I released TripleK2 which is updated to the latest version of K2. Please note that this is just a basic switch from a 2 Column K2 to 3 Column K2 with sidebars on both sides.

Thanks to Michael, Chris, Zeo, Steve, Ben and anyone else who has contributed to K2. Without K2 there would have been no TripleK2. Make sure you visit the K2 Support Forum for all K2 related support.

    Hey John, have a look to the 3 column themes from http://www.fahlstad.se/themes/
    You might like what you see.

    This is a great-looking mod. I’ve been trying to figure out how to make one that looks just like this, with no success. 3K2 wasn’t working with my latest install of WP+K2, so I’ll definitely be trying this.

    Hi John!

    I started a mind boggling journey down the wp path a few days/weeks ago. I’ll leave out the gory details, but suffice it to say, I think it’s time to FINALLY make a squeak online, and you have the dubious honor of being the first to hear it :)

    Long intro, for a really short question :P I notice that TripleK2 seems to have only one Sidebar on the Sidebar Widgets page - as in I seem to only be able to easily control (via widgets, that is) the contents of that sidebar.

    Hakan’s earlier version of 3K2 appears to have 2 Sidebars on the Sidebar Widget page, making it easy to control (via widgets) the contents of both sidebars. Of course, Hakan’s appears to be based on a significantly older version of K2 (right?), so I’d be happy to use the more up to date TripleK2. Just wondering if there was a way around this sidebar thing?

    Also, while my newbie self is here, some quick random questions:

    - do you know of any good style sheets that work well with TripleK2?

    - is K2 basically the only WP improvement of its kind?

    - besides your cool blog, which other places are good for keeping up with developments of K2 based blogs that have more than 2 columns?

    Thanks so much sir! Really really appreciate all your good work! :)

    Nat- TripleK2 currently let’s you control only one sidebar from the sidebar modules page. I will add support for both sidebars as soon as possible.

    TripleK2 is a basic theme. I have not tried any styles with it as I myself is designing one for this site.

    After designing one for my blog, I will design some for public use :)

    is K2 basically the only WP improvement of its kind?

    There are a lot of themes designed for WordPress. But I consider K2 as it’s best theme. You can find many WordPress Themes from here

    besides your cool blog, which other places are good for keeping up with developments of K2 based blogs that have more than 2 columns?

    Bharath has a good 3 column basic theme with both sidebars on the right side. You can downlaod the latest version of his theme from here

    And there’s my first reply! :)

    Thanks John :) I’m really looking forward to both that sidebar support and your style designs, thanks!!

    Style design wise, I’ve found interfaces like Tiga’s Tigarator Option page - which allows basic alterations to design without having to go into the code extremely helpful :)

    I finally stumbled upon K2 after almost settling on a theme, and it got be wondering whether such high tech improvements were unique. Still not sure, but it doesn’t look like K2 has any ‘competitors’?

    Bharath’s theme is pretty good; if I understand correctly, I have to convert to the switch.css to change to 3 columns, thus sort of disabling a simple style/skin change thereafter?

    TriK2 is also good, but using the fact that the theme does not include a K2 Custom Header as my only clue, I take it it’s not using the latest version of K2? (How big of a difference does that make anyway?)

    I’ll try wading through Paul’s tutorial as well as the WP codex over the next few days and do the best I can.

    As always, thanks so much for reply and your great sharings! :)

    I solved the single sidebar problem by replacing your themes functions.php with the one from 3k2. It has a call for Be Sherratt’s SBM plugin, and now I have 2 sidebars in modules.

    Your Triple k2 did not seem to have the “k2 sidebar modules” option in the k2 options. The regular k2 had it. So I had to use Sherratts. I saw a “bootstrap” call but k2sbm never showed. I’m fine, but I was a little confused about it.

    thanks for the useful theme.

    TripleK2 does have “k2 sidebar modules. It’s just that it only allows you to control one sidebar like the original K2.

    Mr. David T. sir, thou art genius! :)

    You may have in a single stroke solved a dilemma for me that’s lasted quite a while - my deepest gratitude :)

    Had a brief problem with the Headers Options page, but managed to see to it :) (beep if anyone else has same :) )

    One extra question: I’m using Sidebar Widgets instead of SBM’s, so i guess the code at the end of the original (TripleK2) functions.php - ie, ‘//SBM for K2′ and ‘// Sidebar registration for dynamic sidebars’ do not apply for me?

    Even if so, will there be problems somehow later? (I don’t forsee switching, but who knows… is SBM really better than Widgets anyway? Except for controlling when and where the widgets/modules appear I suppose….)

    Lastly - what other problems, if any, do you think may crop up as a result of this switch?

    Again, thank you so very much sir (cool site, btw :) ) - you should spread word of this innovation further and wider. I think it could very well facilitate a whole lot more switchovers from 3K2 to TripleK2! And thanks as always, John! :)

    John or Nat- I’m glad someone else enjoys my simple solution. So far I haven’t seen any other problems with using the newer funcions file from 3k2.

    Regarding widgets vs smb, I wouldn’t know since the k2 I was using seemed to use its own version of sbm, and so when I switchyed over it was the same. I thnk sbm is more customizable, which I like.

    best,
    David

    Thanks, it’s great work! Thanks a lot! I prepare guncelyorum.com that’s a turkish blog with k2. But, the theme has errors with IE 6.0 that is used frequently in Turkey. John, can u solve these problems of IE6 ?

    Nat

    October 13, 2006 at 2:10 pm

    David: I most certainly do enjoy the brilliant solution! :) Glad to hear there probably won’t be problems down the road - we’ll keep our eyes and ears open!

    You might be right about sbm’s being better. What’s on this theme seems a bit more hi-tech then the last SBM I saw. Will continue to experiment :)

    Possibly of interest, my ‘K2 Sidebar Modules’ page actually shows THREE sidebars right now (this is with the original 3k2 functions.php page). Hmm.. Not a big deal since it appears to be redundant and does no harm (it could be great tho - maybe add a sliding menu? I love more sbm space :) ), but I am curious as to why that is… any insights?

    John-ji (I know you’re not from the North, but.. :) ) - would you consider creating a new release for TripleK2 that used these alterations? I’m not sure, but it seems users will have nothing to lose and quite a bit to gain (more sidebar control!) by incorporating David’s changes? You’re the boss of course, but just a thought :)

    Thanks so much again to both of you! :)

    kral- Aren’t you using TripleK2? btw, your site is down.

    Nat- Yes, why not. I will release TripleK2 with the changes. But let me first see if there is a better solution to this. btw, I will be releasing TechnoBlue style for TripleK2 soon.

    Also, are you an Indian?

    Malaysian, actually :) Tho I wish I spoke Malayali! :)

    Great news about the release, thanks! Of course, if there are better solutions, all the better :) And yes, there seem to be so few styles for K2, all additions will be appreciated! :)

    Not that it’s super important, but any idea why that 3rd Sidebar thing came up? :)

    Also, i forgot to mention, the sliding menu option I mentioned was from a theme by iqwolf - I’m personally a fan :) what do you think?

    Sorry, but on the subject of new releases, here’s one other feature that I think is super useful, for newbies like me to avoid going into style sheets and code - the WP Themes Toolkit. If you could somehow incorporate this, I think it’d be a great leap forward for K2 themes, esp 3 column ones! :)

    As always, really appreciate all your work! :)

    I checked the latest stable version of K2, they seem to have removed the Meta links that used to be there in the previous versions.

    Anyways I can mail you the code to get the Meta links on your sidebar (I find it hard to put code here in comments).

    Categories and Archives are already there and I can see them on your site.

    What do you mean you can’t see anything on the header? Everything seems to work well on your site.

    Tema proprio bello. Really a very nice theme.
    The only problems is the localization process (I’m doing in italian) with so many files to have to know how dos they work.
    I’ll start anyway to translate in Italian because it’s, I can say again, one of the best I tried:

    I have found that this fixes the problem with missing submit button in IE:

    In the technoblue.css file change this:

    .comments form #submit {
    background: #88abca;
    padding: 2px 40px;
    border: 1px solid #ccc;
    color: #fff;
    margin: 3px 0 0 3px;
    display: inline;
    float:left;
    }

    to this:

    .comments form #submit {
    background: #88abca;
    padding: 2px 40px;
    border: 1px solid #ccc;
    color: #fff;
    margin: 3px 0 0 3px;
    position: relative;
    }

    Apparently IE doesn’t like float.

    Frez- You can put summaries of posts on the homepage by clicking the ‘more’ button where you want the post to show the more link.

    yan- I will fix the problem and put it for download here soon.

    Paolo- I have not tried the Lazyest-Gallery plugin so far. I will try and let you know.

    Jochen - For this you will have to hack theloop.php. I have seen a few tutorials in the past explaining on how to do this but they were for K2 beta two r167 which is no longer available for download. So you can try asking in the K2 Forum.

    There are many helpful members there who will gladly help you.

    Hey John :) Long time no see, I hope you’re recovering from your fever! :(

    I’ve spent most of tonight trying to figure this out with no success. I run two sites using your theme (v 0.9.1, hope to upgrade soon though).

    Tonight, I discovered a weird problem when viewing with IE that is even weirder because it only occurs with one site - http://www.bangkit.net. The other site - http://www.jelas.info - should be exactly the same, but it does not have that problem at all.

    Specifically, the problem seems to be one of those div things, where the right sidebar appears wayyyy down at the bottom of the page.

    I’m going to tinker on it and try a little bit more, but will prob give up very soon! :P Any insights anyone? :(

    A great design, but I’ve got a wierd problem.

    On the front page, when I posted my fourth post, the first three, together with the right sidebar (after the search box) and the footer, increased font size/spacing etc.

    Individual posts, search results and archive pages (and Pages) all appear normal, as does the most recent post and the left sidebar.

    Any suggestions on how I overcome this problem?

    Chris, this sort of thing has happened to me before. Check the html of your 4th post to see if there are any unclosed html tags. If there are, those tags affect the rest of the content that comes after the 4th post.

    John: while I’m here, I might as well mention a problem of my own regarding IE and the right sidebar. Best to just show the sites - jelas.info and bangkit.net. Jelas works just fine, but bangkit has a problem with the right sidebar. Something to do with div’s perhaps? I’m still working on it, but any insight?
